One of our officers is being hailed as a hero, after coming to the aid of Police in downtown Auckland last weekend.
Aza Hatim, who is employed by us as a Noise Control Officer, was driving through Beach Road in Auckland City when he came across the scene of a minor crash.
The sole policeman on the scene was being set upon by four occupants of a stolen car. The officer received bites to his arms and legs, and later needed medical attention.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Newman, the officer in charge of the investigation, said “things would have become serious” if it were not for the intervention of Aza and another security guard.
Aza went to the aid of the officer, who managed to apprehend the driver. More Police arrived on the scene, and three others youths were apprehended and charged.
In a news statement on the NZ Police website, Detective Newman praised the actions of Aza.
“It is selfless acts like this that make you realise it’s more than just Police fighting crime. It’s a team effort and a partnership with the community that makes the difference.”
The wounded Police officer is recovering at home with minor injuries this week. Although he was also bitten and punched during the incident, Aza did not sustain any lasting injuries.
Petra Hakansson of Global Security says this is one of several examples of how the company’s staff play a key role in making Auckland a safer city.
“Our officers also work closely with Police as part of the CityWatch patrol, which monitors public safety in the Auckland CBD.
“Even though Aza wasn’t on a CBD patrol that night – he was on noise control duty – it shows the level of commitment our guys have to the job.”
In recognition of his actions, Aza is being awarded a Certificate and gift by Global Security this week.
